So you're interested in working for Caltrans as an operator? Well, you came to the right place to find out how to get the job. If you haven't read my other article on getting a job as a maintenance worker, you should because it has interview information that's also good to know beforehand. Since the typical promotion path is maintenance worker to operator 2 you should know what the typical duties and questions asked. So, let's get into some of the interview content you need to be prepared!
You should understand what a Pre-op/Post-op of a vehicle is and be familiar with the L.A.W.S test. Since you are an operator it's your job to make sure the vehicles or equipment are in operating condition before you use the equipment. Basically, think back when you took your Class A test and had to go over every inch of the truck from the nose to the trailer. Make sure to explain your experience with heavy equipment and Class A vehicles thoroughly and how you operate them. Also, explain how to load equipment such as a loader and how many chains you need to secure it.
Caltrans is all about safety so understanding defensive driving techniques and how to work safely on the highway such as the shoulder or in a lane closure (again refer to my other articles). For example, if you're working on a shoulder for more than 20 minutes you will need to put out a shoulder closure. Plowing snow may be a part of your job depending on the location so learn about snow removal and snow surveillance (road temps, road conditions, and whether to apply salt or sand on the roadway). Snow removal includes plowing snow on the road, clearing off and on ramps, snow blowing, and clearing critical areas like drains or turn outs.
If you combine this information with my other article on the maintenance worker interview you should have a solid grasp on what's expected in an interview. Always use up the amount of time given to you during the interview. Remember to explain why you're the best canidate for the position and tell them your willing to learn anything you don't know. Make sure to also fix your application so it meets the keyword requirement because if you don't it may be thrown out. If you have any questions feel free to email in so I can add more information. Good luck!
