Caltrans Maintenance Worker Interview Readiness

Updated: Sep 11, 2022

If you made it here hopefully you got that call for an interview and are super excited to kill it because you've read this post. Be sure to dress professionally and look put together because the interviewers DO care. Arrive a little early to the location because you will have to fill out some paperwork and they will make you wait until its done, that may make you look bad. The best thing you can start out doing to prepare for the interview is read the duty statement and familiarize yourself with it. Ok let's go over some of the key points of information you should know before heading in.

Safety

Caltrans is a part of d.o.t and they set the standards for safety state and nationally wide. If you plan on actually working for Caltrans, then learning about best safety practices for this organization will not only help you pass an interview but also continue your career there. Well guess what I have cheat codes for this section, its called Chapter 8 Protection of workers. You will be able to find a pdf with all the safety info Caltrans abides by, shown below.

This is pulled directly from dot.ca.gov website and once you open the pdf read the sections recommended. I highly suggest you read sections 8.01-8.06, 8.08, 8.11, 8.14 and 8.22. But of course, if you want to fully prepare go ahead and familiarize yourself with all of it you will not regret it!

Social Interactions

Just like any job you have co-workers and at Caltrans you also deal with the public directly, sometimes even face to face like when you work in the snow. So, searching for interview questions that deal with conflicts involving co-workers/public will be very useful! Caltrans follows the chain of command when conflicts happen so it's good to know what this entails. Also, the chain of command includes issues on the job site when seeking information on something you do not know or who to trust when guidance is needed. While understanding the job is very important, during an interview being confident will make the interviews more than likely feel you understand what you're talking about. Here is a screenshot from reddit with more information on the social side.
